Gilbert Melendez Signing New UFC Deal Could Lead To Fight Of The Year With Anthony Pettis

In big news from the UFC, Gilbert Melendez has signed a new contract in which he will not only receive a title shot against lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis but he will also serve as coach for the 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter.

With the new deal, Gilbert finds himself in a very handsome position as the number 1 contender to the lightweight crown. After already losing his first chance at the title back in April of last year, he will be hoping for better success this time round.

With the match being scheduled sometime later this year all talk of the Jose Aldo v Pettis fight has been put on hold for now. Fight fans shouldn’t be too sad though as this is a super fight in its own right.

After Melendez produced a fight of the year performance in his last outing, expectations will be high for the two most exciting fighters at 155 to face off.

No doubt this was the best decision for the Caesar Grace Jiu-Jitsu standout, as the number 2 ranked lightweight in the world would struggle to find competitive fights outside the UFC and could find himself in the same situation he faced when he was the StrikeForce lightweight champion.

Filming for the 20th edition of the Ultimate Fighter will begin in May and the two coaches will mentor a new group of female fighters who will be representing the new Strawweight division in the UFC.

This is an exciting time for the UFC as 2014 is rapidly shaping up to be bigger and better with a potential fight of the year already in the bag.
