Houston Texans‘ JJ Watt is a lot of things. He’s a Pro Bowl defensive end in the NFL, a great charity worker, a Lott Trophy winner, guest actor on The League and apparently a pretty good hockey player – certiainly a better hockey moonlighter than Justin Bieber. Video surfaced today of Watt having a little fun on the ice.

No word yet on whether his football number 99 has anything to do with Wayne Gretzky.
While he has made quite a name for himself on the gridiron, he told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King last year that he had grown up playing hockey but decided it was too much of a financial burden for his family.
“Growing up in Wisconsin, a big hockey state, I started skating when I was 3 years old. I played all over,” Watt told NHL.com. “The hockey community [in Wisconsin] is great. It’s very tight-knit. It’s a lot of fun. You have to be tough to play hockey. You have to work hard, and I think that’s why I was drawn to it.”
Now, at 6’5 and almost 300lbs he’s got the size of Dustin Byfuglien and would appear to have some skill to go with it. Pretty impressive to see a football player who can move that well on skates, although elite athletes are elite athletes. A lot of them are so athletic that they’re just good at everything they try their hand at.
I’m thinking of him being some sort of American Zdeno Chara considering his defensive prowess in the NFL. What a nightmare that would be for opposing forwards. With Canada set to repeat for gold in Sochi, I’m actually pretty glad he stuck to football.
