Early in the third period of a blowout between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the San Jose Sharks, Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf tried to, as the saying goes, send a message* while attempting to catch Sharks forward Patrick Marleau with a big open ice hit.

However, Phaneuf missed. And to add insult to injury for him and the Maple Leafs tonight, he tagged his teammate and American olympian James van Riemsdyk. Hard. And high.
3… 2… 1…
Woof. Poor Dion took an NHL11 style path into that hit.
You could say that van Riemsdyk got “reemed.” /bad puns
van Riemsdyk left the game shortly with injury but returned. Good news for him and the Leafs.
No word yet if Phaneuf is likely to receive a suspension.
*(Don’t ask for the reasoning, but in hockey if you’re getting smoked, the thing to do seems to be make the other team pay physically for them professionally embarrassing you. As if that will stop this from happening in the future.)
