Michael Sam was picked 34th in the final round of the 2014 NFL Draft (249th overall) by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday night and becomes the first openly gay player signed to an NFL team.

Debate had intensified as the end of the draft approached over whether or not the defensive end would be selected.

But that was put to bed when the former Missouri Tiger became a part of Jeff Fisher’s team.
