When Fernando Ricksen revealed he was terminally ill as he had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease this time last year it tugged at the heartstrings of football fans across the world.
However, the former Rangers star and Dutch international has shown he is still fighting in this recent heartbreaking interview with FIFA.
“The fighter” as he was known during his time in Glasgow due to the many tussles he got into on the pitch claimed he is glad he is at least doing something to beat the disease and he feels full of energy during what is undoubtedly the hardest part of his life.
It is clear to see from the interview that the disease has had an effect on Ricksen’s speech, however, the two time Scottish Premier League winner said he was unable to speak at all back in May before medicine from Russia has helped him communicate now.
Ricksen finishes off by saying that the support he receives from the world of football helps him fight ALS and I’m sure we speak for everybody when we say we continue to support you Fernando!
