And Azzurri boss Antonio Conte admitted in his post-match press conference that he feared the match would have to be abandoned.
Thankfully, the game did continue but Conte’s side were held to a 1-1 draw with Italy’s Antonio Candreva and Croatia’s Ivan Perisic scoring the goals.
Conte seemed far from impressed after the full-time whistle, especially when talking about the prospect of the match being abandoned.
He said: “It was quite clear that if the Croatia fans threw more fireworks, then the referee would probably abandon the match.”
