Antonio Conte: “I Feared Match With Croatia Would Be Abandoned Because Of Crowd Trouble”

Italy’s match with Croatia was thrown into chaos last night, after supporters threw fireworks onto the pitch.

And Azzurri boss Antonio Conte admitted in his post-match press conference that he feared the match would have to be abandoned.

The game was suspended after 70 minutes when fireworks were thrown onto the San Siro pitch by Croatia fans, with Police confirming they were unsure if the game was safe to play.

Thankfully, the game did continue but Conte’s side were held to a 1-1 draw with Italy’s Antonio Candreva and Croatia’s Ivan Perisic scoring the goals.

Conte seemed far from impressed after the full-time whistle, especially when talking about the prospect of the match being abandoned.

He said: “It was quite clear that if the Croatia fans threw more fireworks, then the referee would probably abandon the match.”

Conte also spoke about Italy’s prospects of qualification for Euro 2016 after picking up 10 points in four matches:
