Player Sends Message To Spanish Prime Minister With Celebration On Catalan Independence Referendum

Sunday’s independence referendum in Catalunya dominated headlines in Spain and one player sent his own personal message to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

David Casany, who plays for Vilassar de Dalt in the 5th Catalan division, scored a goal on Sunday afternoon and revealed his message to the Spanish Prime Minister.

His t-shirt read “El gol de hoy, para Rajoy” translated as “Today’s goal is for Rajoy”. The Spanish Prime Minister is a very unpopular figure in Catalunya and had the courts rule that their independence vote is illegal and therefore meaningless.

Despite the vote technically having no impact on the current situation between Catalunya and Spain, it has galvanised support for a real independence referendum and Catalan Prime Minister Artus Mas has said that this will now help towards organising a legitimate referendum.

While Casany’s strike couldn’t prevent his side losing by two goals to one, his goal celebration has gained him a lot of media attention and his #GolParaRajoy became a trending topic in Spain.
