Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has lavished Lionel Messi with astonishingly high praise – whilst taking a swipe at his bitter city rivals Real.
After Atlético’s 2-3 defeat to Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey quarter-final eliminated his nine-man side, Simeone was asked about Messi’s contribution during Barca’s 4-2 aggregate win.
Simone was only too happy to oblige, and said of his compatriot:
I have played against both Madrid and Barca and you can’t compare Cristiano to Barca’s Messi. Messi alone is more dangerous than Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema put together.
Ironically, despite playing a big part in two of the three goals, Messi didn’t find the net in the five-goal thriller.
The comments are likely to grate with Real’s superstars ahead of the Madrid derby on February 7, which will be Ronaldo’s first game back after serving a two-match ban for aggressively lashing out during the 2-1 win over Cordoba last weekend.
