VIDEO: Per Mertesacker Scores Brilliant Backheel in Arsenal Training

Per Mertesacker isn’t your typical 6ft 6in defender – the Arsenal stopper has some skills too.

He showed those in training this week when he scored a beautiful backheel in a corner kick drill.

After a stramash in the box, his centre-half partner Laurent Koscielny cut back for the German and he finished the ball past Wocjiech Szczesny in style.

Mertesacker missed out in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Sunday after boss Arsene Wenger handed a debut to former Villarreal centre-back Gabriel Paulista.

But it looks like the German international – who won the World Cup last summer – will still be Wenger’s first-choice central defender alongside Koscielny over the rest of the season.

If he can replicate some of his training form in games then he could be a big threat at the other end of the pitch for the Gunners.
