Zinedine Zidane believes Manuel Neuer is a phenomenal goalkeeper, deserving of his Ballon d’Or nomination – but Cristiano Ronaldo won because he’s an alien from another planet.
The Real Madrid Castilla manager assisted top boss Carlo Ancelotti as Ronaldo inspired Los Blancos to a Champions League title last term.
He watched on as the Portuguese star scored 54 goals in 51 appearances that season.
Neuer did make the shortlist alongside Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, but missed out on the top gong at January’s awards ceremony as Ronaldo was crowned the world’s best player.
And Zidane recognises Neuer for his outstanding performances as Germany won the World Cup.
But Ronaldo’s ‘alien’-like season means there was only one winner.
The French legend said:
Neuer is phenomenal between the sticks, but at the same time Cristiano is from another planet, an alien. He improves his game every year.
Meanwhile, Norwegian wonderkid Martin Odegaard could be set for his first team debut after joining Ancelotti’s side in training this week.
He was handed his Castilla debut last week as he completed 20 minutes of a friendly and impressed the Real faithful in their first glimpse.
