When it came to picking Germany’s player of the year, it was always going to be a close-run race.
That’s the benefits of having won the World Cup in Rio a mere eight months ago.
And when fans of Die Mannschaft voted in an online poll on the German Football Federation’s website, Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos came out on top.
According to Madrid’s official website, the midfielder pipped goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and striker Miroslav Klose to the title.
Neuer of course was a candidate for last year’s Ballon d’Or, while Klose broke the record for most World Cup goals during the tournament in Brazil.
Kroos took to Twitter to share the special moment with fans, as he was presented the honour before Germany’s friendly with Australia:
