An average day for us betting but a fantastic days racing – a World Hurdle win for Tony McCoy in his last Cheltenham festival and an unbelievable performance from Vautour blowing the rest of the field away in the JLT Novices’ Chase. Our horses yesterday finished 1,W,PU,10,2,PU.
But it’s all about the final day of the festival and it’s certainly a tough one from a betting point of view. There are loads of angles to come from and my advice would be to follow the market which will hopefully point out some horses fancied to run well.

The Triumph hurdle for juveniles is our first race (juvenile meaning first season 4yr-old hurdlers) and there are plenty horses in here with chances. Nicky Henderson has three in the race – Top Notch, Hagram and the favourite, plus my selection, PEACE & CO @ 5/2 with Paddy Power. All three look like good prospects, but the way P&C has travelled and jumped so far in his races has been impressive. He also beat a good marker in Karezak last time out, who finished very close to Hagram while giving it weight last year. There are also plenty other horses in the race that are unknown quantities like Beltor, Dicosimo and Petite Parisienne.
In the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at 2.40, Ruby Walsh & Willie Mullins team up again with the favourite BLACK HERCULES @ 7/2 with Paddy Power. This former Champion Bumper 4th won well last time over 3 miles staying on well and looks the class horse in the race, having not put a foot wrong in both his starts over hurdles.
On to the main event of the week – the Gold Cup. This year’s race is loaded with capable horses because of the question marks hanging above many of the rides. The front running Coneygree takes a big step up in class, but hasn’t done anything that would make you think he couldn’t handle it. The question is – is he good enough? Lord Windermere lines up once again to have a crack at back-to-back Gold cups – J H Culloty’s horse has been ticking along nicely in preparations for the race and with an unbeaten record at the festival it holds a great chance. Many Clouds, this season’s Hennessey winner, has been unbeaten this term and looks like a horse on the serious upgrade. He has an outstanding chance of taking this today. Last but not least comes my selection and I have to go with SILVINIACO CONTI @ 10/3 with Paddy Power. Silviniaco has looked like he is staying on better than in seasons past, having had a wind operation in the summer and took the King George in some style at Kempton on Boxing Day. Paul Nicholls has also been in good form this festival which is another positive and this would really cap off what has been a great career for the horse so far.
