Just when you thought Jermain Defoe couldn’t be any more of a thorn in the side of Newcastle fans…
The Sunderland striker’s stunning volley settled the Tyne-Wear Derby at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
And now, thanks to the WWE, Defoe has been rubbing salt in the wounds of the Magpies’ supporters.
Defoe was paraded at the Metro Radio Arena during WWE Live, where he took part as a special guest timekeeper.
Unsurprisingly the former Spurs forward was given a villain’s welcome, being jeered loudly by the hostile Toon crowd.
It was the sort of reception you’d normally associate with WWE superstars known as “heels” (the bad guys) such as World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins.
The 31-year-old striker broke down in tears after his winning goal at the weekend made it three in 12 appearances.
Sunderland have now managed to climb to 15th in the Premier League under Dick Advocaat as they look to secure their Premier League status for next season.
