There’s just something about Masters weekend that’s hard to explain.
It’s not quite the elephant in the room, but the elephant following you around everywhere, all weekend, from first tee off until last putt.
As soon as the first groups have teed off I can’t help but wonder how they are getting on, who is leading and who has made a mess of it. And yet it seems like it is almost a battle of familiar faces, fighting it out for the famous green jacket.

In the last 10 years the green jacket has been shared among six golfers which makes you think it suits a certain type of player – one with the experience of going around the famous Augusta course.
In my book you need to be able to bomb it long! Not only that, but it’s preferred you are pretty accurate, hit a natural draw for right handers and a fade for the lefties too. Your short game also has got to be sharp and someone who is low on the ranking for ups and downs.
Let’s get a shortlist of the players who fit my criteria, starting with the obvious: Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, Jason Day, Phil Mickelson, Charl Schwartzel, Henrik Stenson, and, sneaking in, Paul Casey.
All of these players have the experience of the course and the type of game to do well around Augusta, but I can’t back them all.
My four best hopes for Masters success this weekend is:
Bubba Watson @10/1
Jason Day @12/1
Henrik [email protected]/1
Charl Schwartzel @80/1
