Why You Should Watch the Draft Even if You’re Not an NFL Fan

“With the first pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, Tampa Bay Buccaneers select…”

Draft day. That’s special. It’s the day the destiny of 256 athletes is decided. It’s the day the 32 NFL teams secure their future. It’s the day we get to see the Bradys, Mannings and Watts take their first step into the NFL.

Tonight the NFL circus will enter the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. Draft day is arguably the most exciting day between Super Bowl Sunday and the season kick-off in September. Every team, every fan has a dream that their pick – their guy – will be the next JJ Watt or Adrian Peterson (OK, maybe not). There are obviously a lot of expectations for the first overall pick, even though that pick rarely is a surprise. Jadeveon Clowney was the sure pick for the Houston Texans last year, Jameis Winston is the sure pick for Tampa Bay Buccaneers this year.

What makes the Draft so exciting is that you can never know if a player will live up to the expectations, or if he will be a major bust. Take last year’s Draft: Johnny Manziel was the biggest hype before the event, and a lot of guys had him first overall in their mock drafts. He went 22nd to the Cleveland Browns, and people were shocked that he fell so far.

A guy people didn’t talk too much about before the draft was Odell Beckham Jr. “Late 1st round/early 2nd round, got potential,” was the main argument for ‘OBJ’. Well, after the 2014 season we know how it all played out. Manziel was arguably the biggest bust ever with a total of 175 passing yards, zero touchdown passes and two interceptions. Odell Beckham Jr. is another story, making THAT catch, getting 1300 yards and 12 touchdowns. Rookie of the year.

Phone calls, trades, last second picks, move-ups, move downs. The Draft usually has everything. Seeing it all happen live is one of the greatest things on television if you’re an NFL fan. And even if you’re not, it’s something you should watch for all of the above. A solid tip is watching the movie ‘Draft Day’ first, and then be really excited for the 2015 NFL Draft. Because when the Browns get two first round picks, you never know what’s going to happen.
