Arsene Wenger: I Won’t Buy Any More Central Defenders In The Summer

Arsene Wenger: I Won’t Buy Any More Central Defenders In The Summer

In recent seasons Arsene Wenger has been inundated with transfer demands from disgruntled supporters.

However, with the team performing so well toward the end of the season this summer may be quite different.

And the Frenchman has already acted to dispel any rumours of the club targeting a new centre back in the off-season.

Speaking to the Times, Wenger admitted while the club will look to bolster their squad with world class talent, the acquisition of a central defender is not on the cards.

The Arsenal manager cited the number of players at the club who can play that position including, Gabriel, Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy.

Wenger also revealed his future plans for former Southampton star Calum Chambers:

[Mathieu] Debuchy can play there, [Nacho] Monreal can play there, so you can say we are not out to buy a central defender. And Gabriel will be a great central defender. So we have now sorted out the centre backs.

I believe that Calum Chambers will be a centre back, more than a right back, and I want to develop him more as a centre back, even a central midfielder. At the moment I have players who have more experience than he has, but in pre-season I will play him there.

Wenger’s quotes should excite Arsenal fans as the team have become a much stronger defensive unit in the second half of the campaign.
