John Carver Dedicates Newcastle’s Premier League Survival to Tragic Fans John Alder and Liam Sweeney

John Carver dedicated Newcastle’s English Premier League safety to fans John Alder and Liam Sweeney who tragically lost their lives in the Flight MH17 disaster.

Alder and Sweeney were travelling to see their side play in a pre-season friendly in New Zealand last summer when their plane was brought to the ground in eastern Ukraine.

It was a disaster which saw all 298 passengers killed and along with the families of all the victims, Newcastle has been in mourning at the loss of two great men and fans.

Carver and his Magpies side needed to beat West Ham earlier this afternoon to keep their place in the Premier League and avoid relegation to the Championship.

And they did exactly that through goals from Moussa Sissoko and Jonas Gutierrez.

Speaking post-match, Carver dedicated the victory to Alder and Sweeney as well as all of the Newcastle supporters who roared their team on.

He said:

We started the season with a huge disaster.

We lost two of our fans, John and Liam, and I think they were looking down on us today.

I’m getting quite emotional.

But they got us across the line as well.

Every Newcastle United fan gave everything for this football club, including those two lads, so I’m delighted.

With the victory, United moved into 15th place in the Premier League and, significantly, four points ahead of Hull who took the third and final relegation spot.
