Real Madrid have repeated the unusual step to publicly deny they are interested in signing a player this summer.
An unusual move considering clubs like Madrid are linked with new players almost every day.
But they’ve followed that up by denying they’ve moved for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti.
Stories circulating this week say Madrid – who confirmed Rafa Benitez as their new manager yesterday – were ready to make a £44million bid for the Italian playmaker.
And the reigning European champions have now had to deny that via their official website:
In light of the rumours spread by various media outlets concerning an alleged offer on the part of Real Madrid for the player Marco Verratti, the club states:
That Real Madrid have not made any contact with PSG or the player’s agent, and therefore these rumours are completely untrue.
It’s odd for a club as big as Madrid to go on record denying speculation, but maybe it’s a good thing for all those sports reporters out there happy to spin nothing more than false rumours.
