The Open Championship will finish on Monday for just the second time in its history after bad weather hit St Andrews on the competition’s third day.
Heavy rain and high winds had already led to a delay in play for Friday’s second round.
And that meant several players – including joint leader Dustin Johnson and double major winner Jordan Spieth – failed to finish their round before darkness.
But the adverse weather conditions worsened today and after sending those players out to finish their final rounds, play was again halted with some still having a few holes to play.
The R&A has now announced that the second round will be completed today as the weather clears up before the third and fourth rounds are played on Sunday and Monday respectively.
However, fans are not happy – with some criticising the decision to halt play in the first place while others who bought Sunday tickets expecting to see some final day drama disappointed that they won’t.
Here are some of the angriest tweets as golf fans react to The Open finishing on a Monday for just the second time in its 144-year history:
Play is expected to resume at 5pm – two hours after the R&A initially said the golf would get back underway.
