Eddie Pepperell has been the stand-out from the early players at the Open Championship this afternoon.
The unknown Englishman carded a magnificent 66 on his first Open appearance to fire himself into contention for the Claret Jug going into tomorrow’s fourth round.
But it was his devastating drive on the 17th at St Andrews which had golf fans’ hearts in mouths – as he unbelievably hit into water before bogeying the hole.
Before that Pepperell had hit eight birdies through 16 holes to take a share of the lead with US big hitter Dustin Johnson.
And, like everyone else, we’re fascinated to learn more about the 24-year-old from Abingdon.
One look at his Twitter account and we’re pretty confident Pepperell is our favourite guy in the field.
As well as posting pictures with Scotland football manager Gordon Strachan and being critical of the R&A’s decision to let some golfers play despite yesterday’s terrible weather, Pepperell also told this brilliant story about man of the moment Jordan Spieth:
Spieth is a legend – and so is Pepperell for sharing this nugget with fans who very rarely get an insight into how golf’s biggest stars act behind the scenes.
It’s also worth checking Pepperell’s personal blog out as gives his thoughts on life as a top golfer.
