Things turned ugly after Everton’s 5-3 win over Barnsley in the Capital One Cup – as fans turned on defender John Stones.
Stones has been a high-profile transfer target for champions Chelsea throughout the summer window, and the centre-back handed in a transfer request this week in a bid to have his move pushed through.
The 21-year-old Englishman was included in the Toffees’ starting line-up as they travelled to the League One outfit in the cup.
And Stones became the focus of the away support’s frustration after his error allowed the Tykes in to take the lead.
After the match, Stones was verbally abused by Everton fans as he left the pitch – with one fan even catching the whole thing on camera before uploading it to social media.
The fan can be heard telling Stones to “f*** off”, while also referring to him as a “rat”.
However, a far more alarming video was to follow as Everton fans tracked down and followed Steven Naismith and John Stones as they headed home after the match.
Stones reportedly began to cry as furious Everton fans demanded to know whether he would be leaving for Chelsea.
