As usual, yesterday’s Chelsea v Arsenal match was as incident-packed as ever, with two red cards and all eyes on the referee Mike Dean.
The whistler sent off Arsenal pair Santi Carzola and Gabriel but failed to punish Chelsea striker Diego Costa, despite the Spanish international causing mischief all over the pitch, appearing to punch Laurent Koscielny and contributing to the dismissal of Gabriel.
In fact, not only did Costa escape being sent off, or yellow carded, he didn’t give away any fouls at all during the entire 90 minutes.
That’s an incredible statistic if you witnessed Costa’s performance.
And yesterday was just one step too far for one Arsenal supporter who decided to start an official petition to have Dean barred from refereeing his side’s matches – and it’s very popular.
Despite being less than 24 hours old, the petition currently has over 32,000 signatories.
The statement attached explains:
After many poor decisions that go against Arsenal when Mike Dean is refereeing the game, it is time that we get an inquiry to his ability to referee Arsenal games.
Major incidents have occurred in recent and past games that show he is inept at refereeing at this level now. The recent events at Chelsea V Arsenal (19/09/15) highlight this where two Arsenal players were dismissed while Diego Costa the opposition player made 4 straight red card incidents and was show one yellow card only.
Also the incident where Mike Dean celebrated for the opposition, when they scored a goal, this was in the Arsenal V Tottenham Hotspur fixture (26/02/2012).
I suppose only time will tell if the FA take heed and either punish Dean or even stand him down for any upcoming top-flight matches.
