Former Celtic Employee Recalls How Jackie McNamara Once Saved Him From The Sack

Jackie McNamara was sacked by Dundee United yesterday, following their 2-1 defeat to ten-man St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

Despite leading the game and having a numerical advantage for most of the match, the Tangerines contrived to throw away all three points, and find themselves with just one win from their opening nine matches.

That was the final straw for United chairman Steven Thompson, who gave former Celtic hero McNamara his marching orders after the full-time whistle.

Despite the club’s wretched form, many fans on social media were shocked by the decision, given the players McNamara has had sold from beneath him in the last 12 months.

But the dismissal was particularly relevant to one onlooker, given Jackie had saved him from the sack years before.

Matt McGlone, editor of Celtic magazine Alternative View, recalled the encounter during his time working for the Hoops’ in-house magazine, The Celtic View, fifteen years previous.

Had it not been for Jackie’s intervention, Matt would probably have found himself looking for a new job…

Oh, and in case you were curious as to who was the biggest diva in the Parkhead dressing room in those days, you won’t be surprised to know it was a certain Aussie striker…

Ironically, St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright is in the frame to replace McNamara at Tannadice, as well as Ross County’s Jim McIntyre.
