Jorge Mendes Arrives at Man Utd’s Training Ground – Is De Gea About to Sign a New Deal?

Pictures surfaced this afternoon of Jorge Mendes arriving at Manchester United’s training ground, reportedly to try and secure a new contract for David De Gea.

The Portuguese super agent is known to have close ties to United CEO Ed Woodward, and is thought to have fallen out with executives at Real Madrid over their failure to complete a deal for De Gea on transfer deadline day.

It might seem a bit far fetched that De Gea is about to make a dramatic U-Turn and stay in England, but it isn’t that unrealistic if you consider a few crucial details.

De Gea is desperate to be Spain’s number one goalie at the Euros next summer, and La Roja’s manager Vicente Del Bosque has gone on record saying that won’t happen unless he is playing regular football. There is no real prospect of him moving to the Spanish capital this season, with a January transfer seemingly unlikely.

So the only way he can play football this season is in Manchester and they can easily let their two-time player of the year rot in the reserves if he doesn’t agree to sign a new contract.

Perhaps Mendes is there to smooth out a compromise? Perhaps a new deal containing an escape clause?

Mendes famously set up a similar half-way agreement between United and Cristiano Ronaldo, allowing the Red Devils to keep him for a season longer than he wanted to stay.

Either way, Twitter was awash with excited United fans after this afternoon’s developments….
