Despite having the likes of Falcao and Loic Remy in their ranks, Chelsea have found themselves over reliant on Diego Costa for the last season and a half, but the answer to their problems may already be on the books at Stamford Bridge.
Step forward 18-year-old striker Dominic Solanke, the Blues striker who is spending this campaign on loan to Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, whom Chelsea enjoy a strong partnership with when it comes to developing young talent.
Since moving to Holland, Solanke has adapted well, scoring three goals in his eight appearances so far, and the teen played a key part in the club’s academy side winning the FA Youth Cup and Uefa Youth League final last term, before he scored the only goal in the Blues’ post-season win against the Thailand All-Stars in May.
And one former Vitesse defender who continues to watch the club closely has high praise for the tall forward, claiming he has similar qualities to one of the great strikers in world football at the moment.
Ex-Holland internationalist Ferdi Vierklau told Dutch website NUSport:
He’s clinical. Sometimes, with the most impossible balls he knows how to do something beautiful from nothing.
In that way, he is reminiscent of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He’s only 18-years-old and already doing so well.
I expect he will only play one season as Chelsea will take him back and may want to loan him to an English club.
The next Ibrahimovic? We’ll wait and see on that one, but Solanke has been crowned England’s youth player of the year and is expected to challenge for a place in Chelsea’s first-team next season
