Coventry City have confirmed they have pulled off an unlikely swoop for former England international Joe Cole.
Cole enjoyed spells at West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool, however his time at Aston Villa hasn’t exactly been a productive one, with Coventry jumping at the chance to sign the midfielder on loan.
And with such big things expected of Cole from a young age, it’s fair to say this latest transfer in the player’s career has only hammered home what could have been for most fans of the Premier League.
Could he really have emulated Argentina superstar Lionel Messi?
Or was he always destined to be that player you thought had hung up his boots years ago…
Twitter was quick to give their two cents as Cole looks set to move to League One and could be in the squad to face Blackpool as soon as this weekend:
Wasn’t even aware Joe Cole was still at #AVFC.

104 league starts for Joe Cole since turning 25. What a bloody waste.

Love this. Joe Cole: "If you pass Mikel the ball, and it's… like an inch away from him. He'll look at you like you've killed his family."

Joe Cole strikes me as one of those players whose career would have had an entirely different trajectory if Fergie had gotten hold of him.

Joe Cole also one of the special breed of footballers who are almost always referred to by their full name. See also: Ruel Fox, Pat Nevin

Maybe Joe Cole's doing a Robert Jarni & going to Coventry only briefly, before moving to Real Madrid.

Joe Cole trending…after moving to Coventry. He's one player that really didn't have the career he should have had!

Coventry are currently fifth place in the League One table, three points behind leaders Walsall.
However, Tony Mowbray’s side have a game in hand over all of the teams above them.
