Dundee United boss Mixu Paatelainen asked “what’s the point in fucking training?” after his side were thrashed 5-0 by Celtic at Parkhead today.
A brace from Kris Commons and strikes from Leigh Griffiths, Dedryck Boyata and Scott Brown inflicted a ninth loss of the season on Dundee United, who continue their downward spiral toward a relegation battle.
And the result forced Paatelainen to question why his players were unable to convert what they did all week in training into a match-day scenario.
He told the media after the match:
What is the point in f****** training?” as his players do not follow instructions on the park.
It was rubbish with a capital R. You can set out your tactics and prepare for the match but if you don’t do the basic things right then everything goes into the rubbish bin.
We did not do the things we had to in order to eliminate the quality and movement of Celtic players.
They are good players and they will hurt you.
After that I’m not surprised Dundee United are bottom of the league as we don’t get the basic things right, it’s as simple as that.
Dundee United are currently rock bottom of the Scottish Premiership, having won just one game since the start of the season and having conceded 26 goals.
Paatelainen had earlier claimed that the threat of relegation inspires him to succeed at Tannadice.
However, that confidence was short lived as an in-form Kris Commons ran the show at Celtic Park after his midweek bust-up with the club’s coaching staff.
The pressure if firmly on Paatelainen to turnaround the Tangarines form, yet with recent performances in mind, it would appear they may need a miracle to avoid a relegation scrap.
