Ronny Deila has hit out at Kris Commons for the midfielder’s reaction after being subbed against Molde.
Commons – who scored his team’s only goal and looked like the most dangers player in green all night – was replaced by Nadir Ciftci with just over 10 minutes remaining in the 3-1 Europa League defeat and was far from happy with the decision, with fellow play-maker Stefan Johansen largely anonymous throughout.
The result leaves the Hoops with just two points from their opening three matches in the competition’s group stage, and now face crucial must-win matches at home to Molde and Ajax if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the knock-out rounds.
After the match, Celtic manager Deila branded Commons’ behaviour unacceptable, and claimed that the former Scotland international needs to remember it’s a team game.
He told broadcasters BT Sport:
We wanted to have two strikers on but we always need to have balance in the team.
If we have four strikers then we will never have the ball.
Kris has played many games and there is going to be many games in the future as well so he wants to win and he wants to play but I don’t like that reaction of course.
It is very important to say that. This is a team. It is not about one single player.
When asked if he would speak to Commons, Deila responded:
It is not acceptable.
I can understand the fans’ frustration but every decision we make we do it as a team but it is not a one man show and that was not good enough.
