Rangers loan star Nathan Oduwa lit up the Scottish Championship immediately following his move north from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer with his showboating and pace.
Oduwa made headlines after his debut when he was accused of “taking the p***” by Alloa defender Colin Hamilton who was on the wrong end of a rainbow-flick from the 19-year-old during the Gers’ 5-1 win at Recreation Park back in August.
However, since then the England under-20 star has been on the end of a few rough challenges from opponents, with Livingston’s Kieran Gibbons finding himself lucky not to see red after a leg-breaking tackle during a Petrofac Cup clash last month.
One fan called up Clyde 1’s football phone-in show Superscoreboard to ask former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae if he believed that Oduwa’s recent dip in form was due to the fact he found it too rough in Scotland – to which Rae disagreed with before comparing the starlet to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking on Clyde 1, Rae said: “Because of his age he likes to do a wee bit of showboating at times.
“He’s clearly a talented boy, I’ve seen him skip past three or four players at times. Once he’s more direct and he takes away a bit of the trickery he’ll be fine.
“He’s like Ronaldo at the beginning, when he wanted to do fourteen stepovers but once he started to get down to basics and getting at people he was a lot more dynamic and could get people on the back foot.”
After former panelists Gerry McCulloch and Mark Guidi picked up on the wild comparison, Rae defended himself by saying: “I’m talking about technique. Sometimes it can be wasted and invites these tackles but when he gets it down, gets playing and gets at people it’s a different ball game altogether.
“He’s nowhere near the same level but I can see comparisons with the trickery and stuff but once he’s direct it’s different.”
