Now, the transfer window isn’t even open but we’re still picking ourselves up off the floor after hearing the craziest rumour in a long, long time.
The rumour in question involves Real Madrid legend Raul moving to – yes, you’ve guessed it – their deadly rival Barcelona.
Raul, 37, officially called time on his career earlier this week, after playing his final match for New York Cosmos, but according to (usually) respectable Spanish newspaper Sport, the veteran could quickly be hauled out of retirement to ruin his entire legacy at The Bernabeu by playing for Real’s bitter, bitter enemies.
The newspaper’s logic is that Barca are in for a short-term, quick impact striker, in the mould of Henrik Larsson, and Raul would fit the bill.
But Raul? In a red and blue shirt? No way. And thankfully Twitter exists so that we could reassure ourselves we hadn’t dreamed the whole thing up…
Sport has lost it, they are linking raul to barcelona ? pic.twitter.com/49q4F8dfQN

Barcelona-based SPORT linking Raúl with a short-term "Larsson-style" move to Barcelona in January. The reaction here would be *insane*

@eaamalyon There is literally no chance of that happening. If it’s anyone, it’ll be RVP.

@eaamalyon sales/hits must be down this month

At least there will be something for the fans to talk about when Barca and Real meet in the first El Clasico of the season on Saturday evening.
