Shola Ameobi is Offering to Play For Bolton Wanderers For Free

Are there many nicer guys in football than Shola Ameobi?

We’re guessing probably not.

The former Newcastle United striker, now 34, has been playing for struggling Championship side Bolton this season, but with his contract expiring at the end of this month, it looked unlikely that they’d be able to retain the former Nigeria international.

In case you’re not up to speed, Bolton are going through one of the worst periods in their history, with debts of around £172 million and a pending winding-up order from HMRC over an unpaid tax debt.

Last week we told you how manager Neil Lennon and his staff had chipped in to pay some of the wages that the club couldn’t afford for January, and now it has emerged that Ameobi is willing to stay on at the club until the end of the season without taking any sort of wage at all, according to Sky Sports…

Sadly, an embargo on registering new players means they are unlikely to be able to secure his services any longer, but still, what a gesture.

Well played, Shola.
