Louis van Gaal was probably dreading tonight’s FA Cup match with Shrewsbury Town.
His Manchester United side were on a hiding to night. Win, and everyone simply shrugs; get beat and it’ the biggest embarrassment in the club’s history.
But the Dutch coach probably wasn’t expecting to be attacked by his own pencil during the last-16 tie.
Van Gaal famously takes notes and looks on passively during his team’a matches, but he may need to rethink his strategy – or maybe just his choice of writing implement – after almost taking his own eye out as he went for a sip of water:

Thankfully van Gaal avoided embarrassment – so far, at least – both on and off the park, with the pencil narrowly missing his eye, and United leading 2-0 at half-time.
Goals from Chris Smalling and Juan Mata put the Red Devils in the driving seat, with a quarter-final spot against West Ham up for grabs.
