Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has claimed that the Catalan giants will have their work cut-out when they face Arsenal tomorrow evening – because Mesut Ozil is “just like Messi”.
The two sides square-off in the Champions League last-16 second-leg at the Nou Camp, with Barca leading 2-0 from the first-leg in North London.
Whilst they trail by two away goals, few teams in world football have a player as in-form as Mesut Ozil in their ranks and his international team-mate ter Stegen insists Ozil is up there with five-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi.
Ozil seems to have fulfilled his potential at the Emirates this season, setting up 18 goals so far and remains on course to beat Thierry Henry’s all-time assist record for a single Premier League season.
And speaking ahead of the tie, ter Stegen said via The Evening Standard: “As a footballer, Ozil is a player who can do unthinkable things, just like Messi.
“He is impressive, and we will have to be alert that he does not harm us. I have played with him two or three times and he is a very significant player for the German national team and can do incredible things.”
Whilst the keeper was effusive in his praise of Ozil, it wasn’t forgotten that Messi’s two goals were the difference in the first-leg, and he could well prove to be the difference again tomorrow night.
Ter Stegen added: “Everyone knows Leo Messi is the best player in the world.
“His presence stands out on the pitch and he has always tricks that no-one knows about.
“It is great for us and like all the players on the pitch he wants to win and we want to do everything to help him.
“He is one of the best with free-kicks, he can shoot from everywhere, you never know where it will go and his attitude is incredible.”
