Denmark boss Age Hareide has compared Andreas Christensen to Franz Beckenbauer and believes the Borussia Mönchengladbach defender could play in a suit.
Christensen will obviously be a name well known to Chelsea fans considering he’s on loan from the English Premier League club until the summer.
The defender signed on at Stamford Bridge in 2012 and has emerged as just another in a seriously talented roster of youngsters at the club.
But it’s so far been unknown if he’s good enough to be a success at Chelsea – that is until these comments from Hareide.
Christensen made his first start for Denmark in their 2-1 victory over Iceland on Thursday and has earned rave reviews ever since.
According to former Malmo manager Hareide, Christensen is like Germany’s greatest ever defender and is so good he could play in a suit.
He said, via dr.dk: “He reminds me of Franz Beckenbauer – he still has work to do to reach him – in his playing style, because he’s really relaxed and elegant. It almost looks like he could be playing in a suit.
“Yesterday [vs Iceland] he did fantastic. He went in to the game with the calmness that was needed, he was strong in duels, and anticipatory. He has the whole package, and he’s humble and listens, so I am well impressed by him.”
Those comments are sure to please Chelsea fans and some may hope that he can go on to become a first team regular when he returns next season.
It looks unlikely that John Terry will be back after the summer and Kurt Zouma is still to recover from a knee injury so whoever comes in as Chelsea manager will need to go about addressing the club’s centre half situation as soon as possible.
