Exploding Firework and Flares Cause Palermo v Lazio to be Suspended Twice

Palermo’s Serie A clash with Lazio was suspended twice tonight after a firework exploded on the pitch and violence broke out in the stands.

The play was halted in Sicily by referee Andrea Gervasoni shortly before half-time with disorder breaking out in the stands.

Play was resumed, making it into the second half before a firecracker went off near Lazio winger Antonio Candreva and Palermo midfielder Robin Quaison:

BT Sport’s Serie A pundit James Horncastle was watching on as the unsavoury scenes unfolded at Renzo Barbera:

He added that seats were being thrown by angry Palermo fans:

The match is now back underway – with the visitors leading 3-0 – but there must be legitimate concerns over whether or not they will be able to complete the final 15 minutes of the game.

The game has been marred by incidents off the pitch, with a Lazio fan reported to have been stabbed before kick-off.

That’s believed to have led to bigger clashes between Palermo and Lazio supporters going into the match.

There’s a general feeling of discontent among Palermo supporters as a result of the season they’ve had so far.

They’re third bottom of Serie A and are desperately looking for some form to help them move clear of the relegation zone.

The club have had seven different managers already this season and president Maurizio Zamparini has been criticised heavily for failing to replace former star man Paulo Dybala after his departure to Juventus last summer.

Lazio lead the match through a double from Miroslav Klose and Felipe Anderson’s strike.
