And after Barca won the La Liga title this season, the 33-year-old wrote his name into the history books as he became the Brazilian with the most titles in football history – surpassing the legendary Pele.
Alves added to his impressive haul at the weekend too, as the Catalan club ran out 2-0 winners over Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final.
Amidst the celebrations, Alves posted a video to Instagram where he jokingly trolled Pele for having won less titles during his career.
During the video, which has been translated from Spanish, Alves made it clear he was joking when he said: “Pelé, you are the King … You are the King, but I have more titles than you… Yeah quiet favourable! Quiet, friendly! Nothing happens.”
He added: “I know I will get criticised for this, but I’m happy. It’s us! I will do what? I’m Happy … In football history there will always be an account of my story. So beautiful. Now I will go cook.”
We await to see what kind of reception this video gets in Alves’ native Brazil, where Pele is still considered one of the country’s most popular celebrities.
