Anthony Stokes is Released By Celtic…And Fans Don’t Know What to Make of It

Anthony Stokes will leave Celtic on a free transfer this summer after the club declined their option to extend his contract for another year – and fans aren’t quite sure what to make of it.

After falling out of favour under Ronny Deila, Stokes went on loan to Hibs in January but failed to pull up any trees overall during his time in Edinburgh.

That is, of course, until the Scottish Cup final, where a Stokes-inspired Hibs team ended 114 years of frustration by beating Rangers at Hampden.

The Irish striker scored twice and put in a brilliant performance – just two days after Brendan Rodgers had been unveiled as the Deila’s successor at Celtic.

Such an outstanding performance – against the Hoops’ biggest rivals, no less – could have perhaps tempted Rodgers into giving Stokes another chance at Parkhead, but it appears the former Liverpool boss has other plans for his new-look front line.

Fans reacted to the news of Stokes’ departure in various different ways:

There were those who reckon it’s pretty much a good move all round:

There are those who want to see him end up at Hibs with Neil Lennon – or even Rotherham with Alan Stubbs:

And there are even some Rangers fans who’d take a cheeky punt on him:

What do you think of the news?
