Robbie Brady headed in the Irish winner just a few minutes from time against Italy to secure a knockout stage fixture against hosts France next week.
Ireland joined Wales, England and Northern Ireland in reaching the second round of the tournament, meaning every one of the home nations have made it out of the group stages for the first time ever – apart from Scotland, of course.
The Tartan Army were denied a coveted spot in France after finishing fourth in their qualifying group, behind Ireland, Poland and world champions Germany.
And rather than revelling in their recent glory, British fans have taken time out from the festival of football to rub Scotland’s nose in it:
Can you water the plants and put the bins out please, we've decided to stay another week.

Seeing the usual big picture stuff about Scotland's failings. Just get a manager who can inspire and go from there.
