Host nation France kicked off their Euro 2016 campaign on Friday evening with a bit of luck on their side as a late Dimitri Payet wonder strike sealed a 2-1 victory over battling Romania – much to the delight of his West Ham boss Slaven Bilic.
The 29-year-old became a national hero with his unbelievable left footed strike to ensure the hosts started with a win on the opening night and for 90 minutes of tonight’s clash with Albania, it seemed that they would need another moment of Payet magic to earn victory.
But Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann finally gave his side the lead in the final moments of the game with a well taken header inside the box.
And Irons maestro Payet finished off the job with another fantastic effort – this time less than 20 yards out – all but sealing France’s qualification to the last 16 of the competition.
The entire nation would have been ecstatic at another late victory but one man who seemed happier than anyone was Payet’s manager at club level who jumped on ITV’s table in celebration.
