New Mexico offered Upland High School (Upland, California) athlete Gary Theard a scholarship on Tuesday, as the three-star recruit announced the news on his Twitter:

Theard has amassed quite a list of college suitors, one that currently stands at 11 and includes Hawaii, Air Force, Army, Utah, Colorado State, Navy, UNLV, and now New Mexico.
“Yesterday before practice as I was walking out the door, Defensive Line Coach Stan Eggen from New Mexico told me to give him a call, and I called immediately,” said Theard. “We had a great conversation and he told me how much of an impact player I can be for them and how important I am. I was very excited to hear that they offered me.”
The Upland star says that while he plays multiple positions, he prefers to be listed on the defensive side. “Colleges like my physical play and my size, which allows me to be dangerous in the box,” and as to what New Mexico preferred Theard to play, he replied, “New Mexico recruited me as a safety.”
“They bring an opportunity for me to possibly play as early as a young freshman or sophomore,” Theard said, regarding what New Mexico brought to the table for him. “They are also relatively close to home and they play away games fairly close to home.”
Gary Theard also told me he doesn’t have a date set for when he will make his college decision saying, “As of now, I’m open to every college that is interested in me because when I make my decision, I want to make sure it is the best choice for me.”
He plans on taking all five of his official visits, but won’t tell me to which schools. Theard knows two schools he will be checking out, but says he is still deciding on the other three.
