Tyron Woodley Wins UFC Welterweight Title

Tyron Woodley knocked out Welterweight champion Robbie Lawler  just over two minutes into the main event of UFC 201, claiming the title in the process.

Lawler and Woodley seemed to be waiting for one another to strike first, with Woodley knocking Lawler to the ground with a single overhand right, and causing a referee stoppage with the ensuing flurry of right hands on the ground.

Lawler last loss came in 2014, when he was defeated by Johny Hendricks at UFC 171 for the then vacant Welterweight title. Coincidentally, he defeated Hendricks for the title in December of 2014 for the title at UFC 181. He managed two successful defenses against Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit, with the bloody MacDonald fight being named the 2015 Fight of the Year by almost every MMA publication.

Woodley’s first challenger is likely to be the number 1 ranked Welterweight Stephen Thompson, who is coming off of a win over Rory MacDonald.
