Everyone Finds Thierry Henry Being Named Belgium No2 Really Weird

If Roberto Martinez being Belgium’s new manager wasn’t weird enough, Thierry Henry becoming his assistant should do it.

The Spanish boss was sacked by Everton in May, but got quickly back into management after being put in charge of the Belgian national side at the start of this month.

That was unexpected considering the issues Marc Wilmots had during his time in charge of the nation – and the way Martinez’s time at Goodison Park ended towards the end of last season.

But it was nowhere near as surprising as the news Henry is to assist Martinez with Belgium.

Martinez named his first Belgian squad this morning for upcoming friendlies against Spain and Cyprus, revealing the news about Henry at his press conference:

Henry has no coaching experience at the top level of the game and has only helped out in Arsenal’s youth academy while working full-time as a pundit with Sky Sports.

That lack of management experience, coupled with no clear link to Martinez, means many are surprised at Henry’s appointment:

Are you surprised by Henry’s appointment as the Belgian number two?
