The Hammers are beginning life at the new home, the Olympic Stadium, and host Buffon and his Juve team-mates in a glamour friendly at the venue this Sunday.
And whilst the stands will be packed with jubilant natives, it seems one of the visitors will be getting just as big a kick out of the day too.
Writing in his autobiography ‘Numero 1’, published in 2010, he revealed which English club he followed, and said via SportBible: “West Ham: Because of the supporters: I knew the West Ham supporters during my time as a supporter (Ultra)“
“Those guys (West Ham supporters) follow the Hammers with an extraordinary energy. And because of the logo (club crest): Two crossed hammers. Almost communist, if I think about it.”
At the age of 38, and having admitted he plans to retire after the 2018 World Cup, it seems unlikely that Buffon will ever have the opportunity to play for the club from the east end of London.
But it seems fitting that a man with such respect for the club will help to open the Hammers’ new ground.
