Joey Barton Launches Passionate Defence of Andre Gray Over Tweets

Joey Barton launched a passionate defence of Andre Gray tonight over the Burnley striker’s controversial tweets.

The English hitman scored one of his side’s goals in their 2-0 win over Liverpool at Turf Moor this afternoon.

But he would have turned on his phone to see a lot of activity on his Twitter account after several controversial tweets were discovered from years past, including homophobic comments.

Gray was forced to tweet a statement out this evening clarifying that his tweets – from 2012 – were sent at a difficult time in his life and he apologised for the offence caused.

The defence

Now Barton has jumped to Gray’s defence, saying the striker – who he played with at Burnley last season – is not homophobic and should be used an example to kids from troubled backgrounds:

It’s unclear whether or not Gray will face any punishment from Burnley over the tweets, but that should be unlikely considering he wasn’t one of their players when they were sent.

He joined the Turf Moor club in a £6million move from Brentford in 2015 and scored 23 goals as the Clarets achieved promotion to the Premier League last season.
