Opening Games of Men’s Olympic Football Were Good For Serge Gnabry and Takuma Asano

Serge Gnabry and Takuma Asano made good personal starts to life at the Olympics on the first day of the men’s football tournament.

The Arsenal pair are taking part in the Games in Brazil over the next month, with Gnabry representing Germany while Asano plays for Japan.

The Germans were able to start their tournament off with a draw, holding Mexico – the gold medallists from 2012 – to 2-2 in their group C opening match.

Oribe Peralta got the scoring underway in the second-half, but Gnabry hit back quickly, curling in a nice finish following a great run in behind:

Unfortunately for Gnabry, he was unable to lead his side to victory as Rodolfo Pizarro netted again for the Mexicans before Matthias Ginter headed in a 78th-minute equaliser.

Japan kicked off their campaign later in the day, facing Nigeria in group B, and Asano – who signed for Arsenal in July – was in their team from the start.

While Gnabry’s Germany got a draw, Asano’s Japan were on the losing side of a thrilling encounter which finished 5-4.

But Arsenal fans would have been delighted to see the Japanese striker show off his poaching skills with a brilliant backheel finish to help his country get back into the game:

Gnabry and Asano hitting some form will be welcome for Arsene Wenger, with the former struggling throughout last season while the latter needs to now prove he’s good enough to play for the club.
