The Gunners were looking for a new club captain following the departure of Mikel Arteta in the summer, and Arsene Wenger has now plumped for his World Cup-winning centre-back.

But the fact that Mertesacker is out injured for the next couple of months hasn’t gone down well, nor has the fact that, well, Mertesacker isn’t exactly the most popular player in Arsenal’s history, is he?
In the not too distant past the likes of Tony Adams, Patrick Vieria, Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas have all worn the armband for Wenger during his 20 years in north London.
But it looks like Mertesacker isn’t quite in that echelon of club legends in the eyes of a lot of supporters:
Bloody hell. I can't believe Mertesacker has been named captain despite the injury https://t.co/ylDtfDQZ0o

Not quite a ringing endorsement, eh?
But is he really that bad a choice? Who else would take the armband?
