Arsenal enjoyed their first European victory of the season in the Champions League this season, courtesy of a 2-0 win over Basel at the Emirates, and Mesut Ozil was full of praise for his team-mate Alex Iwobi afterwards.
It was Theo Walcott who’ll grab all the headlines, with the England midfielder scoring twice, but Ozil was keen to point out winger Iwobi’s growing influence on Arsene Wenger’s side, having only broken into the Gunners’ first-team back in April.
In fact, Iwobi impressed Ozil so much that the World Cup winner even compared him to Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha, who just happens to be Iwobi’s uncle, and Dutch legend Edgar Davids.
Speaking in Arsenal’s match-day programme, via The Metro, Ozil said: “Alex reminds me of a mixture of him (Okocha) and Edgar Davids.
“He’s really strong on the ball, also defensively, but he’s good in front of goal too.
“He’s developing really well and if he continues the way he’s been playing for the whole season, he will enhance his game.
“The manager knows exactly how good he is and I wish him all the best.”
Iwobi is, obviously, a pacey winger, so his uncle and Edgar Davids aren’t the two people that immediately jump into mind when you think of comparisons, but it’s till pretty high praise.
At just 20, how big a player could Iwobi be for Arsenal this season? And what do you make of Ozil’s comments?
