John Hartson is Taking A Lot of Stick For His Take on Scotland’s Oliver Burke

John Hartson has suggested that Oliver Burke‘s move to Germany has been engineered by greedy agents, and questioned why the Scotland international didn’t sign for a club like West Brom or Sunderland – and some fans really aren’t happy about it.

Burke, 19, sealed a sensational move from Nottingham Forest to Bundesliga club RB Leipzig last month for a fee in the region of £13 million – making the teenager the most expensive Scottish footballer of all-time.

He then made his full international debut for Gordon Strachan’s side in Sunday night’s 5-1 victory over Malta, and showed flashes of why such as fuss has been made over him.

But former Celtic and Arsenal striker Hartson seems to think Burke has been poorly advised, and laments the fact that one of the UK’s most exciting prospects is now playing abroad.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, the ex-Wales international said: “He’s gone over to Germany and I can’t understand that, to be honest with you. I think that stinks of agents more than anything else.

“How much German football do we all see? We see highlights of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, and that’s about it.

“The Premier League is the place to be. I thought that was the next step for him.

“He’s gone to Leipzig, but what about a Burnley or a Sunderland or a West Brom?

“It’s only my opinion, but I think he is good enough for the Premier League.

“I think the Premier League would have tested him and I think that would have probably suited Gordon Strachan too. He could have had a better look at him.

“Who watches the German league? You watch the Premier League, then the Spanish league.

“I would much rather see a young Scottish talent like him playing in the Premier League.”

Hartson’s comments haven’t gone down well with punters on social media, many of whom are presumably of the opinion that it’s a good thing a young, exciting player has decided to test himself in a foreign country:

What do you think of his comments? Are they really out of touch, or is there something to them?
