It’s a New Boxing Month Soon – But we shall be Missing…

Matches that got made (kinda)…

It got made and then it has not got made so let us start with the big news – Tyson Fury v Wladimir Klitschko is AFF! As it stands RIGHT NOW all we know is Fury is medically unfit to fight. What does that mean? Only the Fury machine knows. We wait for the next update and hope all is well afterwards. The possibility is, of course, that one or all of the awarding bodies who have not had their big title fight in nearly a year decide to strip Fury of all the belts. It’s possible and to be honest very likely. This is an age of highly competitive and lucrative heavyweight boxing and the WBA and WBO are NOT going to wait much longer before getting in on the act. The WBA might just rub some salt into the wounds and offer a certain Mr Haye his chance…

And news of Billy Joe Saunders making his first defence of his WBO title on the undercard is now in jeopardy, surely? There were a few names in the mix and none of them from Kazakhstan but plenty of tasty encounters. Will he be shoved up to headline I wonder?

Meanwhile back in Scotland…

Things are truly exciting and my inability to get to boxing nights is quite frustrating at the moment – too many clashes… SO the 1st October bill at Bellahouston is just around the corner. Live on box Nation this is MGM Scotland’s real chance to shine. I have gone over the bill elsewhere on the site but just to whet the appetite further we have – a British title eliminator involving John Thain and Nathan Bough; Steve Beattie gets in the ring with Lee Redpath in a battle that might just be worth the Box Nation subscription alone; the return of the guy brave enough to take on George Groves – David Brophy; Lewis Benson is back and faces Dean Byrne; oh and no fewer than NINE other contests. We may get provided our Horlick before the end of the night!

Ryan Brawley, native of Ayrshire and one time Prizefighter champion has announced he is coming back. We don’t know where and we don’t know when but it’s happening guys…

There is more on offer in Scotland and on the TV as the 21st October fight in the Meadowbank Stadium will not only feature Josh Taylor v Dave Ryan for the Commonwealth title but Jason Easton goes head to head with Cardiff’s Mitch Buckland for the Celtic title at super lightweight. Live on Channel 5 AND Spike TV this is likely to be a massive and fantastic night of Scottish boxing!

As we move into October Frankie Gavin is back as he faces Sam Eggington in Birmingham on the 22nd. Both natives of the city this is a very exciting match up for the fans. It is Gavin’s first outing since losing to Kell Brook and comes after he has recovered from injury so we are likely to see a very determined fighter in the ring against a guy who really fancies his prospects once he gets Gavin out the way. Another fighter for whom I have a great deal of affection is Lenny Daws who was robbed for this European crown last time out with a referee ruling a clash of heads an intentional head butt. He is off to Rome to do what the Romans do – win in a gladiatorial contest. He will face the undefeated Anthony Yigit for the EBU European super lightweight title in 4 days time – 28th September!
