As a football fan, it’s a way of showing your appreciation for their contribution on the field.
And it’s usually merited on consistently good performances, gaining fan favourite status, or becoming a bit of cult hero.
But Arsenal have found a new way for players to justify to fans exactly why they should decide to get their names on replica jerseys off the pitch.
Arsenal TV teamed up with their Junior Gunners initiative to help young fans decide which player in particular they would like to wear on the back of their kits.
The Gunners devised a simple question and answer session, allowing the kids to ask top stars a series of silly and random questions in a bid to help sway their final decisions.
The youngsters quizzed the likes of Calum Chambers, Hector Bellerin, Francis Coquelin and Nacho Monreal on a number of ranging topics.
They asked the Emirates players to reveal what German international Mesut Ozil smells like.
Spanish ace Monreal was also questioned on why he was named after a type of crisp.
